When Was Our Current Road Signs Invented?

Alex Pflug's Blog | When Was Our Current Road Signs Invented?

One would think that road signs have been around forever.

No one really thinks too much about our road signs, but they play such a significant role in our safety.

Not sure how it would have been back in the day when road signs did not exist.

Of course, there were hand gestures but those can be harder to see and cause more accidents.

So how did our current road signs come to be?

Would you be surprised to find out that our current road signs were invented in 1965, on January 1st?

It is true, although it took some time and some help through the late 50's and 60's, but the current road signs we follow today, were introduced in '65.

In fact, it involved two commitees. The Anderson committee, who developed the motorway signing system and the Worboys committee who signed it off for all existing roads.

Would you have guessed 1965?
